play on the U.S. Highways instead.<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve come to love driving on the old <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/US_Highway\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Highways<\/a> when taking road-trips.\u00a0 Construction on these highways was started in 1926 and were largely bypassed or usurped by the Interstate freeway system beginning in the 1960&#8217;s, or have been downgraded to state highways.\u00a0 The heyday for these routes was the post-war period from the 1940&#8217;s and 1950&#8217;s.\u00a0 Remnants and ruins from this period are still visible along the roads, such as restored motels and diners, or the remains of old gas stations.<\/p>\n<p>The symbols for these old highways are black and white shields or badges.\u00a0 When planning road-trips, I actively seek out these routes on the maps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4835.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-342 alignnone\" title=\"US60-4835\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4835-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4835-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4835-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4835.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the west these highways are sparsely used.\u00a0 I love this because it means I can pull off anywhere and take a photo or a pee, or make a U-turn if I passed something interesting.\u00a0 It&#8217;s very relaxing due to the lack of traffic and often very scenic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4848.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-345 aligncenter\" title=\"US60-4848\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4848-426x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4848-426x640.jpg 426w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4848-133x200.jpg 133w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4848.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->I recently took a road-trip to California from Colorado.\u00a0 A portion of that trip was along U.S. 60 between Socorro, New Mexico and Globe, Arizona.\u00a0 I came across an old windmill museum.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4839.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-343\" title=\"US60-4839\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4839-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4839-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4839-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4839.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then there was <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pie_town\" target=\"_blank\">Pie Town<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4841.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-344\" title=\"US60-4841\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4841-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4841-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4841-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4841.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Wildlife I saw along the way:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_340\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4725.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-340\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-340\" title=\"US60-4725\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4725-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4725-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4725-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/US60-4725.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jack Rabbit?
