Since the cabinet is in fairly good shape, I&#8217;ve wanted to only fix the various blemishes instead of stripping and refinishing the whole thing.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that stripping is not even an option.   Even though the cabinet is mostly wood, they used a faux wood-grain on everything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_632\" style=\"width: 436px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/jb-5891.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-632\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-632\" title=\"jb-5891\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/jb-5891-426x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/jb-5891-426x640.jpg 426w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/jb-5891-133x200.jpg 133w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/jb-5891.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This realistic looking walnut burl has been printed directly onto the wood, probably using a silkscreen.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a real challenge to find stains and paints to match the existing finish.\u00a0 The color shades are different on various parts of the jukebox.\u00a0 In addition to that, these days many stains and paints are not compatible with each other or with various topcoats such as lacquer or polyurethane.<\/p>\n<p>For example I found a set of stains from Old Masters that match closely to the shades used on the jukebox, but it turns out they blister when I topcoat them with lacquer.\u00a0 Polyurethane doesn&#8217;t cause this problem but I prefer to use lacquer.\u00a0 Polyurethane doesn&#8217;t cure entirely hard which makes it difficult to rub out imperfections in the final finish.\u00a0 Another drawback is it tends to yellow with age.\u00a0 Lacquer was originally used on this jukebox.<\/p>\n<p>So it&#8217;s been a bit of a slow start while I tested all of the combinations of paints, stains and topcoats.\u00a0 Zar stains are compatible with lacquer but I have to blend the colors myself to get the right shade.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/?tag=seeburg-146\">See all posts<\/a> related to this jukebox.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As prevously mentioned, I&#8217;ve begun the Seeburg jukebox model 146 restoration project.
