{"id":75,"date":"2010-06-08T07:02:02","date_gmt":"2010-06-08T14:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/?p=75"},"modified":"2010-06-08T07:21:26","modified_gmt":"2010-06-08T14:21:26","slug":"75","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/?p=75","title":{"rendered":"High Water Levels in Creeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Right now, with the higher than average temperatures, the snow pack is melting very fast and is causing flooding in the creeks.  It has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a Flood Advisory.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting looking at the oscillations in creek flow over the course of a day.  Below is a graph of the flow rate into Barker Reservoir.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreekintobarker.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-76\" title=\"bouldercreekintobarker\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreekintobarker.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreekintobarker.png 700w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreekintobarker-300x128.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It peaks at about 9 PM each evening.\u00a0 Assuming that the peak snowmelt happens at 3PM (a wild guess based on the peak temperature), it takes 6 hours for that water to travel the various streams and reach Barker Reservoir.<\/p>\n<p>Further downstream, about 15 miles down Boulder Canyon, the peak flow rate is at about 1 &#8211; 3 AM each night.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little more bumpy looking because North Boulder Creek and Middle Boulder Creek have merged and they probably have slightly different peaks.\u00a0 Also, normally the dam at Barker would smooth out the bumps, but since the water is spilling over the dam, it isn&#8217;t a factor.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreekatorodell.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-77\" title=\"bouldercreekatorodell\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreekatorodell.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreekatorodell.png 700w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreekatorodell-300x128.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And still further downstream, east of Boulder near Walden Ponds, the peak flow rate is about 8 &#8211; 9 AM.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreek75th.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-78\" title=\"bouldercreek75th\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreek75th.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreek75th.png 576w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/bouldercreek75th-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 576px) 100vw, 576px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, from snowpack to Walden Ponds, it takes about 18 hours for the water to travel that distance.<\/p>\n<p>And something I learned last year when I nearly got stuck driving across a creek, the highest water level each day may not be when you think it is.<\/p>\n<p>Edited to add:<\/p>\n<p>The city of Boulder was built in a flood plain.\u00a0 If a hundred-year flood ever happens, it will likely occur in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Right now, with the higher than average temperatures, the snow pack is melting very fast and is causing flooding in the creeks.
