(Click for larger.)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to be somewhere south of the upper blue line.\u00a0 In the hopes of somehow combining some interesting scenery with the eclipse, I finally settled on going to Valley of the Gods in southern Utah (pink dot on the map).<\/p>\n<p>By the time I finally got the Xterra loaded with camping and photography gear, it was raining\/snowing around noon on Saturday.\u00a0 I knew I wasn&#8217;t going to make it all of the way to the Valley of the Gods, so my first night was spent in one of my favorite places near Arches National Park, Klondike Bluffs.<\/p>\n<p>Klondike was warm and clear.\u00a0 Once I settled on a camping spot (there was no one around for miles), I set up my camera and did a few test shots of the sun.\u00a0 Overall, an class=\"wp-caption-text\">Looking straight down the hole.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was hard to tell how far it goes down.\u00a0 My neighbor who is a miner tells me they put these wooden platforms at various points in the shaft, so that if a miner falls, he falls to the next platform rather than falling all of the way to the bottom of the shaft.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_892\" traveled, I saw that the sky was getting more hazy.\u00a0 I had heard there was some smoke in the atmosphere from some wildfires in Arizona.<\/p>\n<p>I arrived in the Valley of the Gods around noon and spent a couple of hours deciding where to camp.\u00a0 There were only a few other people on the 17 mile loop.<\/p>\n<p>[I&#8217;ll skip the part about the flaming asshole who tried to take over my campsite several hours later.\u00a0 He felt he was entitled to it because it&#8217;s his &#8220;go-to&#8221; spot.\u00a0\u00a0 After he left, I had guessed he was from Boulder, Colorado.\u00a0 The most selfish people with a sense of entitlement come from Boulder.\u00a0\u00a0 Once I returned home, I tracked down the logo on the side of his Range Rover and I was right: from Boulder.\u00a0 He came back two more times to harass me by driving by at a high rate of speed to kick up as much dirt and dust as possible.]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_895\" style=\"width: 436px\" Look in the lower right to see the sun in the lens reflection. The sun is still so bright that it blows out the digital sensor in the camera.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I had hoped to get a shot of the buttes with the eclipsed sun next to them.
