As usual, click on the photos for a larger version<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>My friend <a href=\"http:\/\/sdaa.info\/joel\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joel<\/a> has been visiting Colorado this past week.\u00a0 He asked how to get the photo effect of smoothing out the water.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a time exposure.\u00a0 All five of these photos use this technique.\u00a0 The exposure second time exposure<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This only works with a camera that has some manual control.\u00a0 The amount of time needed depends on fast the water is flowing and how smooth you want the effect.\u00a0 The lens I was using for these photos has the ability to close down its aperture to f22.\u00a0 With a polarizing filter on the front of blocking a little bit more light, I was able to do exposures of 1\/13 to 1\/2 second.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<dl id=\"attachment_925\" class=\"wp-caption  aligncenter\" style=\"width: 436px;\">\n<dt exposure.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>Sometimes I also use a neutral density filter on the end of the lens.\u00a0 This filter blocks even more light (9 stops) and allows me to use longer exposures.\u00a0 It makes the water appear even more wispy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_922\" style=\"width: 436px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a exposure<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I lugged a tripod up to the falls.\u00a0 The camera has to remain perfectly still during the exposure, or everything gets blurred.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div
