Normally there would be more snow and wildflowers.\u00a0 Niwot mountain is a relatively quick (less than 1 hour) hike up from near Lefthand Reservoir.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chief_Niwot\" target=\"_blank\">Niwot<\/a> is named after a native Indian chief of the Arapaho. His nickname was Left Hand, probably for obvious reasons.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_944\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7414.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-944\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-944 \" title=\"ip-7414\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7414-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7414-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7414-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7414.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-944\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lefthand Reservoir and Mount Audubon from Niwot Mountain (11,400 elevation)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Mount Audubon, in the photo above, is a thirteener, meaning it&#8217;s summit is over 13,000 feet in elevation.\u00a0 I know I&#8217;ve attempted the summit a couple of times, decades ago.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t remember ever making all of the way up.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a long hike with a 3,000 foot elevation gain.\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to attempt it again this year and cement a yay or nay into my memory.\u00a0 I think if I could stop injuring myself, I&#8217;d be in good enough shape to accomplish it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_945\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7409.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-945\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-945\" title=\"ip-7409\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7409-640x426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7409-640x426.jpg 640w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7409-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/ip-7409.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some type of shrine\/memorial at the top of Niwot<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I have mixed feelings when I discover shrines or memorials in conspicuous places along trails or on top of mountains.\u00a0 They&#8217;re interesting to look at, but they are selfish when placed at such a public point.\u00a0 There are so many corners of the forests or on the sides of mountains that would be more appropriate.\u00a0 But claiming a major mountain top as your own is simply self-centered.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I like getting up on the tundra this time of year.
