{"id":986,"date":"2012-07-28T14:12:38","date_gmt":"2012-07-28T20:12:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/?p=986"},"modified":"2020-04-30T20:08:12","modified_gmt":"2020-05-01T02:08:12","slug":"joyce-gellhorn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/?p=986","title":{"rendered":"Joyce Gellhorn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My friend Joyce passed away last night.\u00a0 It was not unexpected.\u00a0 &#8220;Death is part of life and I don&#8217;t fear it&#8221;, she said.\u00a0 Fortunately, I got to say goodbye to her a few weeks ago.\u00a0\u00a0 She was so peaceful and so accepting.\u00a0 That makes her passing so much easier.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sad; I&#8217;m happy and lucky to have known her.<\/p>\n<p>I met Joyce probably 15 to 20 years ago when she became involved with the <a href=\"http:\/\/bcna.org\/\">Boulder County Nature Association<\/a>.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve gone on hikes with her, taken nature classes she taught, and for a few years we attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denvercenter.org\/about-us\/denver-center-theatre-company.aspx\">theater<\/a> with other close friends.\u00a0 Joyce has spent her life learning and teaching aspects of the natural world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_987\" style=\"width: 490px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00007.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-987\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-987\" title=\"DSC00007\" src=\"http:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00007-480x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00007-480x640.jpg 480w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00007-150x200.jpg 150w, https:\/\/invertedsky.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/DSC00007.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-987\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joyce happily digging a hole to show us the different layers of snow. Winter Ecology class, March 2002.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>She had been fighting cancer for several years and succeeded at least temporarily.\u00a0 When her cancer returned, knowing the end was near, she went to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bhutan\">Bhutan<\/a> and trekked over 80 miles.<\/p>\n<p>When she returned, she began working on her memoir <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Aspen Dreams<\/span>, which will be published later this year.\u00a0 My friend Steve has written a foreword for the book.\u00a0 Here is an excerpt:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She doesn&#8217;t love nature, she revels in it. And she&#8217;s always moving forward, always eager to find whatever natural wonder lies beyond the next bend in the trail. Her students tell, lovingly, of field trips extending far beyond the appointed hour and of hearing the expression &#8220;just a little farther&#8221; way too many times. One friend remembered, &#8220;We were reassured when Joyce insisted that the group would return around by 2 p.m.&#8211;until we noticed that she wasn&#8217;t wearing a watch.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s these qualities&#8211;an intense love affair with the natural world coupled with forward-looking optimism and physical resolve&#8211;that have enabled Joyce to survive the premature deaths of two sisters, a brother; and a son; desertion by a husband of 26 years; and two bouts with cancer. They&#8217;ve inspired her to conduct groundbreaking research in the lives and adaptations of aspen trees, write poetic books about white-tailed ptarmigan and the alpine life zone, and introduce several thousand students, age 5 to 85, to field ecology.\u00a0<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212; Stephen R.
